Did you receive a positive result on your pregnancy test? If so, an ultrasound is the next step for confirming your pregnancy.
How Does Ultrasound Work?
Ultrasound is a simple scan that uses sound waves to create an image of your internal organs. This is different from X-rays, which use radiation.
There are two main types of ultrasounds used during pregnancy: transvaginal and abdominal. Transvaginal is used earlier in pregnancy because it offers a clearer picture of the pregnancy, and it involves inserting a transducer (the wandlike part of the ultrasound machine) in your vagina. Meanwhile, an abdominal ultrasound is used later on in pregnancy, and it involves the transducer being moved along your abdomen.
During both types of ultrasound, you will be able to see the image of your pregnancy on the ultrasound screen.
Why Do I Need an Ultrasound During Pregnancy?
Ultrasound is essential during pregnancy because it gives you the information you need to know to protect your health. An ultrasound will help determine the following details about your pregnancy:
- Gestational age: This is essential information, especially if you’re considering a medical abortion (which is only FDA-approved if your pregnancy is 10 weeks gestation or under).
- Location: Most pregnancies attach and develop inside your uterus, but sometimes this process happens outside the uterus. This is a life-threatening condition known as ectopic pregnancy, and it needs immediate medical intervention.
- Viability: Roughly 26% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage, and an ultrasound will look for signs of life (like a heartbeat) to determine if you’ve miscarried. If so, you will need medical follow-up to ensure you don’t face any complications.
