Did you miss a period this month? Feeling sick to your stomach or vomiting for no reason? If so, you’re likely worried that you might be pregnant. If you recently had unprotected sex or your routine birth control failed, there’s a chance that you’re, in fact, pregnant.

While the only way to know for sure if you’re pregnant is to take a pregnancy test, many women do experience common symptoms that can hint at pregnancy. The following list provides the most common early pregnancy symptoms. But it’s important to note that not every woman experiences every symptom, and some women don’t experience any early pregnancy symptoms except for a missed period.

Top Symptoms of Early Pregnancy

During pregnancy, your body is flooded with a special mix of hormones that tell your body to stop menstruating and instead get everything ready to maintain a pregnancy. These hormones can end up causing symptoms in some women. If you’re experiencing any of the following, there’s a chance you might be pregnant:

  • Missed menstrual period: This is often the first sign that you might be pregnant. If you’re still expecting your period this month, or if a month or more have passed since you last had a period, there’s a chance pregnancy might be to blame.
  • Tender, swollen breasts: Have you noticed your bra fitting tighter lately? Are your breasts more sensitive or painful than usual? While your period can cause these symptoms, so can pregnancy. If you’re experiencing breast changes and have missed a period, there’s a good chance you might be pregnant.
  • Nausea with/without vomiting: Have you been feeling sick to your stomach or vomiting for no reason (like food poisoning, sickness, etc.)? If so, you might be pregnant. Commonly referred to as “morning sickness,” the nausea and/or vomiting that often accompanies early pregnancy can strike any time, day or night.
  • Increased urination: During pregnancy, your body’s blood volume increases, which causes your kidneys to work harder and produce more urine. If you find yourself running to the bathroom more than usual, you could be pregnant.
  • Moodiness: Crying one minute and laughing the next? Feeling more irritable than normal? Mood swings are another sign of pregnancy.

While these symptoms can be a sign of pregnancy, they can also indicate other health conditions. This is why, if you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s critical to take a pregnancy test. This is the first step in confirming a pregnancy.
